Why do you like working outside of a traditional office?

Updated: Nov 18

Welcome to another Scriptorium team Q&A or #AskScriptoriumAnything. One of the things that make our team unique is that we have no single office space. This requires good team communication skills and self-motivation, but having no commute is one of the perks of the job.

The flexibility is fantastic, and coming from a smaller community, not having to commute into the city has saved on time and stress!

I love the challenges and the flexibility of freelance writing. Clients come to us with documentation needs at various stages, and we create solutions. Each client and project is unique. Plus, I have more control over my schedule to coordinate with mom stuff, creative writing, and health.

I learned quickly in my career that I like to work when I’m working and not be tied down to filling hours or attending meetings that don’t make sense to me.

I think, ultimately, there is a pull between stability and flexibility when you think about working for a company and working freelance. For me, that flexibility in the past 13 years gave me time to be a caregiver, get involved with extra creative projects, and build in some freedom in my schedule. I think we are lucky that with our team approach, Scriptorium is now at the point where we have some stability as well, so we get the best of both worlds. I am grateful to see how far we’ve come together.

When I started university, I knew I wanted to do something that would give me some flexibility, like working remotely. During my university years and my early career, commuting and then working in a half-full building really bothered me. I could never stop thinking about how much environmental damage we do by commuting to jobs that can easily be done remotely. So even pre-COVID, I wanted to live in a more rural setting and lower my carbon footprint. Three cheers for permanent remote work!
